Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace for refusing to obey the unjust edicts of the king. They obeyed the commandment of the Lord in lieu of preserving their own lives. They knew the truth alone could set them free… and the Truth did.
“…we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue that you set up” … “But I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God… Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants that trusted in him;they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.” (Today’s First Reading, Dan 3:95)
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man… On that day, a person who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise a person in the field must not return to what was left behind. Remember the wife of Lot. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. (Luke 17:26-33)
If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (Today’s Gospel, John 8:31-32)
